Fighting for what’s right, naturally.
Many courthouses in the western world feature some version of Lady Justice, usually as a statue of a blind-folded woman holding a sword and the scales of justice. For me she is draped in verdant green, and clean mountain water, but still holds a sword.
My job is to act as advocate for my clients, to help bring their lives back into balance, whether on an individual or community level. Our society and our environment have been thrown out of balance by greed, ignorance, colonialism, and short-sightedness. Whether in my legal work or in my new role as a father to two beautiful little girls, I try to do my part to ensure a good future for our children, for the next seven generations.
I first came to Vancouver Island in 1992, came back for the blockades against logging old-growth in 1993, and am proud to make my career serving the people and wild places of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.
The dual impetus behind my work has been a love of nature and a love of justice. This is where my work with environmental law and First Nations peoples coincides. For me, justice means fairness and balance. I see my role as making sure my clients are treated with fairness and restoring balance where it has been lost. Because the Earth needs us, we need the Earth, and the only way forward is together.
